"El Son de la Negra", the emblematic "Cien Años" (immortalized in the voice of Pedro Infante ), and "La Bikina" (performed by Luis Miguel) were written by him; as a composer he has compiled a repertoire of more than 300 works; next February 15 he would have been 96 years old.

The composer was born in Ciudad Guzmán, Jalisco, in 1926, and is one of the important figures in Mexican music.

He was the main producer of Pedro Infante, for whom he produced more than 40 songs, as well as Marco Antonio Muñiz and Miguel Aceves Mejía.

Almost all the relevant artists gave voice to his songs: Flor Silvestre, Jorge Negrete, Lola Beltrán, Rocío Durcal, among others.

In 1944 he joined the Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, as a violinist, also as an arranger and later as head of artistic production and general direction, until now.

Rubén Fuentes is one of those characters who tried to stay away from the spotlight.

The SACM lamented the death of whom it considers one of the musical souls of Mexico.

"The Society of Authors and Composers of Mexico mourns the departure of Rubén Fuentes, musical soul of Mexico. His inspiration and talent opened immense paths in the art of composition and dressed Mexican music as a gala. Maestro Fuentes also reached an outstanding place in the field of artistic direction such as production and musical arrangements. Rest in peace who had the gift of knowing what people wanted to hear and feel. A hug for his family, friends and all those who love his music," it reads.

In addition to his contribution as an author, his positions in the Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán and his work as musicalizer of José Alfredo Jiménez 's songs in the fifties and sixties, Rubén Fuentes has been musical producer of the International Mariachi Encounter and the Charrería held annually in Guadalajara.

Among his distinctions are having been declared Best Composer of the Year in 1954, 1958, 1959 and 1971; platinum records for his productions Lucero de México and Cariño de mis affections; two Latin Grammys for his song "Neither Princess nor Slave" performed by Vikki Carr and for his work as a producer in Canciones de mi padre by Linda Rondstadt; Jalisco Award in the area of music by the State Government; the appointment —of which he feels proud and satisfied— of Preclaro y Predilecto Son (1967) by the City Council of Ciudad Guzmán; the Trajectory recognition (2008) for his 50 years as a composer and the Grand Master award (2016), an award that praises the creative work of those living authors and composers who, with their talent and inspiration, have raised the name of Mexico, his work being an international benchmark, both awarded by the Society of Authors and Composers of Mexico (SACM), among many other decorations.

With his talent, maestro Rubén Fuentes Gasson has made Mexican music dress up and tour the entire world.
