 Filmmaker Geraldo Sarno dies aged 83

Bahian filmmaker Geraldo Sarno died Tuesday night at the age of 83. He was hospitalized for a month in Rio de Janeiro’s Copa D’Or due to complications from Covid-19. Geraldo had taken the 3 doses of vaccine and was preparing to return to his hometown of Vitória da Conquista.

7;s first film, was shot in São Paulo and is part of the history of Brazilian cinema. It is available in full on the director’s website.

“Viramundo” was a pioneer that brought about the new image of the Brazilian working class, that of the peasant of Northeast origin fleeing drought and famine, and the emergence of a neo-Pentecostal religious system that is hegemonic in Brazil today.

The film contains valuable images of the city in 1964 and was released weeks before the military coup.

Geraldo Sarno would have been 84 on March 6th. The filmmaker became known for dealing with topics such as the Brazilian migration movement (especially in the Northeast), religions and popular culture. In 2008 he received the Best Director award at the Festival de Brasília for the film “All That Seems to Me a Dream” about the story of the Pernambucan general Ignácio Abreu e Lima, who took part in battles alongside Simon Bolívar led in the 19th century to liberate Colombia, Venezuela and Peru from the Spanish crown.
