The conductor and composer Remo Usai, considered the greatest musician in Brazilian cinema, died at the age of 93 in Rio de Janeiro. One of the main names in Cinema Novo, Usai was responsible for the music for films such as O Assalto ao Trem Pagador (1962) and O Caso Cláudia (1979). The latter won him the award for Best Soundtrack at the 12th Brasília Festival of Brazilian Cinema. Three issues earlier, Usai had already been nominated for the award for the score for Sin in the Sacristy (1975).
But the musician also left his mark on hits known to the general public, such as O trapalhão nas Minas do Rei Salomão (1977), O trapalhão na arca de Noé (1983) and As aventuras da Turma da Mônica (1982). Over the course of his career, he has composed scores for over 120 films and countless television shows. Usai is still today the composer with the most works in the history of Brazilian cinema and was the only professional specialized in the area in the national market between the 1960s and 1970s.

The musician's importance is such that he was the subject of academic works by film students and a documentary entitled Remo Usai - A Musician for Cinema . The production, by Bernardo Uzeda, features an interview with Remo himself and people who have followed his 40-year career. The documentary won the É Tudo Verdade Festival, 2008 edition, in the best short film category.
He was also the protagonist of a legal dispute for copyright that dragged on from 1983 to 2021. The Central Office of Collection and Distribution (Ecad) made a judicial deposit determined at around R$ 3.5 million to the composer, who was already with 93 years old and in poor health, due to the reproduction of his music.
Crematorium
The death was reported by the family to the newspaper O Globo on Wednesday (9/2). The information shows that he suffered a bronchoaspiration on Sunday (6/2) and was admitted to the hospital, but could not resist.
The composer is survived by his wife, Antonia Colacicco Usai, two children and four granddaughters. The wake will be at the Crematorium and Cemetery of Penitence, in Caju, in chapel nº 5, this Thursday (10/2), from 12:30 pm. Then the conductor will be cremated.
