Small, Margaret L. Kalamazoo, MI Margaret "Peg" L. Small (Haugen, Pell), 93, was peacefully called to her heavenly home on Wednesday, January 12, 2022, from Faith Hospice at Trillium Woods, Byron Center, MI. Peg was a thespian working many years in the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre (the Civic), New York's Broadway theatres, many prestigious regional theatres around the country, multiple radio channels, and the television industry. Peg started her career at WKZO-radio and WKZO-TV (now WWMT) as a news editor. She hosted Feminine Fancies, a local talk and variety show. After receiving a generous gift from Irving S. Gilmore, Peg moved to New York City. In 1986, she understudied for Jean Stapleton and Marion Ross in a production of Arsenic and Old Lace, and in 1989, she starred in Broadway's, Orpheus Descending with Vanessa Redgrave. Peg also had reoccurring roles in the soap opera, Another World. One of her most memorable jobs was 2004's Kinsey, a film starring Liam Neeson about a sex researcher, claiming that she had the best line in the whole movie. Peg moved back to Kalamazoo in 2005 to give back to the local theatre community. She enjoyed anything related to the arts, being at opening night at nearly every local theatre she could get to, collecting artwork, and encouraging the artistic talents of her children. She also loved all University of Michigan sports, her alma mater, class of 1950. For more on Peg's artistic and creative life, see the YouTube video, "Peggy Lou." (https://youtu.be/3rG4YNUdfmk) Peg was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Myra Pell, and her son Erik. Her children will deeply miss her, Mark (Maureen) Haugen and Leslie (Kevin) Dunn; grandchildren, Brittany (John) Nagy, Lukas (Beatrix) Haugen, Chance (Rebecca) Dunn, and Keeley Dunn; and great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Gracie, and John Henry Nagy; and Gunnar Haugen. The family will be burying Peg's ashes along side her parents at the Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell, MI. A memorial service will be held later in the spring. In place of flowers, contributions in Peg's memory to the Kalamazoo Civic Players will be accepted (329 S. Park St., Kalamazoo, MI 49007).
