Sandy Dvore, Emmy-Winning Graphic Artist and Title Designer, Dies at 86

Dvore's artistry can be seen in some of the most iconic title sequences in television including 'The Waltons' and 'Spenser: For Hire.' 

Sandy Dvore, an Emmy-winning American graphic artist and title designer who created the walking partridges in The Partridge Family and the brush-stroke logo for The Young and the Restless, has died. He was 86.

A rep for Dvore confirmed he died on Friday evening. 

Born in Chicago in 1934, Dvore studied at the American Academy of Art from 1953-1954 before moving to Hollywood.

Dvore's artistry can be seen in some of the most iconic title sequences in television including The McMasters, Getting Together, Two on a Bench, The Man, Nakia, The Waltons, Knots Landing, Eischied, Spenser: For Hire, North and South, Sable, A Hobo’s Christmas, and Wolf. He also created the main titles for North and South - Books I and II, Evergreen, Police Story and Falcon Crest. His film title credits include the 1972 Blaxploitation thriller Blacula, and the 1976 film Lipstick.

Dvore won an Emmy Award in 1987 for the main title of the television special Carol, Carl, Whoopi and Robin that starred Carol Burnett, Carl Reiner, Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams.

He initially made his mark with designing trade ads for artists in the 1960s including Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Lee Marvin, Bobby Darin, Kirk Douglas, Jimmy Stewart and Sammy Davis, Jr. He is credited with redesigning the United Artists logo, which debuted in Rocky III and appeared across UA films from 1982 to 1987, as well as creating the Solo cup logo and selecting its memorable red color.

Dvore is survived by his Chicago-based family including his sister and brother-in-law, three nephews and great nieces and nephews.
