Shelley Fabares Dies: TV Sitcom Favorite Also Starred In Movies, Including Opposite Elvis

Shelley Fabares, whose career stretched from teenage television stardom to hit sitcoms, movies, and a No. 1 record, has died.

Fabares died Saturday, Aug. 22, in Los Angeles following a brief illness, her family said. She was 82.

“To her family and friends, Shelley was a source of love, strength, laughter and comfort,” they said in a statement, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

“She was a devoted wife, cherished stepmother, daughter, sister, niece, aunt, family member and loyal friend whose warmth, generosity, humor and grace made an enduring difference in the lives of everyone who knew her. She had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcomed, valued and cared for.”

Fabares became a household name as Mary Stone on “The Donna Reed Show,” appearing on the ABC sitcom from 1958 to 1963. She later found another long-running television role as Christine Armstrong on “Coach,” earning two Primetime Emmy nominations.

Her career also included a recurring role on “One Day at a Time” and appearances on numerous other television series.

Fabares scored a major music hit in 1962 when “Johnny Angel” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

On the big screen, she held the distinction of starring opposite Elvis Presley in three films: “Girl Happy” in 1965, “Spinout” in 1966, and “Clambake” in 1967. She also appeared in the acclaimed 1971 TV movie “Brian’s Song.”

Fabares married music producer Lou Adler in 1964. They divorced in 1980. She married “M*A*S*H” star Mike Farrell in 1984 and remained married to him until her death, according to her Wikipedia bio.

She underwent a liver transplant in 2000 after developing autoimmune hepatitis and later became an advocate for Alzheimer’s research following her mother’s diagnosis.

Fabares is survived by Farrell and her stepchildren. Memorial plans have not been announced.
