The Beginnings
Desideri was born in Rome, in Borgo Pio, on February 16, 1939. During the war, his family moved to the Marche region where he obtained a diploma as an industrial technician. Desideri, however, returned to Rome to pursue his dream of making films, an art that had always excited him, and thanks to an uncle who supplied shoes for major film productions, he began to model the shoes that his same uncle is preparing for the colossal Cleopatra.
Visconti and Billy Wilder
He began as an assistant set designer until he met Ferdinando Scarfiotti with whom he had the opportunity to work with Luchino Visconti, in Death in Venice and with Billy Wilder in Avanti!
Bertolucci and Storaro
He met Bernardo Bertolucci and Vittorio Storaro and brought his talent to over 120 films, including Antonioni's Professione: reporter, Pasolini's Salò, Fellini's The City of Women, Liliana Cavani's The Night Porter and Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in America.
The Oscar
In 1988 he was awarded the Oscar, the Davide di Donatello and the Ciak d'oro for the best set design of The Last Emperor.
