THEATER The actor Walter
Maestosi, who divided himself between cinema, theater and television, combining
his work as an interpreter with those of voice actor and theater director, died
in Rome at the age of 87. The funeral was celebrated today in the Roman
church of the artists in Piazza del Popolo.
The beginnings of Maestosi in the
theater
Born in Rome on September 24, 1934,
after graduating in law, Maestosi graduated in 1960 from the National
Academy of Dramatic Art and began his career in theater, directed, among
others, by directors Silverio Blasi , Guido Salvini , Orazio
Costa , Edmo Fenoglio and Mario Landi , landing almost
immediately also in the radio prose of Rai. Particularly active in this
area, he participated for Radio Rai in more than a thousand productions
including radio dramas, comedies and cultural programs of various kinds.
Widower of the actress Laura
Gianoli (under whose direction he recorded the thirty-three songs of
Dante's inferno in seven CDs), he was active as a voice actor mainly for the
SAS. With the singer and actress Daniela Barra he was the
promoter of the theatrical project dedicated to poetry Narciso and Eco. With
the soprano Alma Manera , on the other hand, he interpreted and
directed the recital written by Corrado Calabrò T'amo di due amori .
Between cinema and television
In the second half of the
1960s, Walter Maestosi became a well-known face of black and white
television by participating in many Rai dramas, such as ‘Le
inchieste del commissario Maigret’, ‘Ritorna il tenente
Sheridan’, ‘Sheridan, squadra omicidi’, ‘Un certo Harry Brent’, ‘Nero Wolfe’, ‘La donna di picche’.
Walter Maestosi has also acted in
the cinema: he appeared in about thirty films including ‘Ringo's Big Night’, ‘El
Rojo’, ‘Kill Rommel’ and ‘The Long Cold Beach’.
He was also a voice actor: he lent
his voice, among others, to Max von Sydow in ‘Kojak - Murderer
on the Loose’, ‘I'm Not Sleepy’, ‘Druids - The Revolt’.
