RIP Peter Ziesche

DEFA

November 11, 2021

We mourn the cameraman Peter Ziesche (1955-2021), who on the 3rd. Passed away in Berlin after a long serious illness in November.

Peter Ziesches film artistic career at the DEFA was only short-term. At that time, however, he filmed some of the most important DEFA networks, including ONE CARRY OF THE OTHER... (1987), THE ACTOR (1988), THE BRUCH (1989) and THE TANGOS PLAYER (1990).

Ziesche worked with knowledgeable directors such as Frank Beyer, Roland Gräf, Siegfried Kühn and Lothar Warneke. After the DEFA process, he was a free-creative worker and became the wanted cameraman in the whole German film and television business. For his work in Bernd Sahlings' successful youth film DIE BLINDGANGER (2004) he was nominated for the German Camera Award.

The DEFA Foundation has long been closely linked to Peter Ziesche. He stood by us several times in advising us on digitalization projects. For the first time in 2014 he exhibited his photographs, which took place over many years in different parts of the world. In 2018 he gave information about his DEFA creation period in a time witness interview (see photo). A comprehensive interview with Peter Ziesche is in "Camera is running" (Hrsg. Peter Badel) printed in the series of scriptures of the DEFA Foundation.

Peter Ziesche will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
