Performer Irma Serrano has died at the age of 89.
The star suffered a fatal heart attack on Wednesday morning in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, Mexico, the Mexican news station Foro TV reported.
The Mexican-born star - who also went by the nickname La Tigresa - worked as a singer and actress in her native country for over five decades.
She stood out for her inimitable vocals in rancheras and corrido music in hits like Cancion De Un Preso and El Amora De La Paloma.
Serrano also acted in several films such as Lola La Trailera, La Tigersa and La Venganza de Gabino Barrera.
In the 1990s, she also ventured into politics and occupied a seat in the Mexican Senate.
It was rumored that Serrano and Mexican president Gustavo Díaz Ordaz had a short-lived romantic affair. She confirmed the romance in her book A Calzón Amarrado.
The National Association of Interpreters of Mexico announced Serrano's death on Twitter, writing in Spanish: '@ANDIMexico announces the sensitive death of interpreter partner Irma Serrano.
'We send our deepest condolences to his family and friends.'
Her career began as a singer when she was in her late 20s.
She then moved into acting with the movie Santo vs. the Zombies, featuring famed Mexican wrestler El Santo.
The 1961 film had this synopsis: 'Santo the Mexican wrestling star locks horns with a mad scientist who wants to conquer the Earth with his zombie army.'
In 1963 she played Rosa in the film Tiburoneros about a shark fisherman in Tabasco who romances a local girl before returning to Mexico City.
In 1972 she landed the lead role as the hot-to-trop temptress in La Martina, which would win her international acclaim.
In 1978 came Carnival Nights with hunky star Jorge Rivero; the film was about women working in a cabaret.
She last acted in the film Stepmother in 2005. The film was about a woman who spends 20 years in jail for murder. When she gets out, she finds out that the only way to recover her son and daughter is to prove that she is innocent of such a crime.
Next it was Mexican soap operas like La Tierra, which started in 1974, and La Madrastra, about a woman convicted of murder returns to her country after gaining her freedom.
In the 1990s she entered politics in Mexico, and was a deputy for the state of Chiapas.
The star was also in tabloids for her wild lifestyle and social connections.
