The world of cinema is in mourning this Thursday, December 1st. At the age of 87, the actress Mylène Demongeot has died, as just announced by the Midi Libre. After battling cancer in 2019, the actress born in Nice in 1935 had announced the recurrence of it at the beginning of October.
Mylène Demongeot thought she was done with the disease. Unfortunately, the famous actress had announced this very bad news in the columns of France Sunday: her peritoneal cancer had recurred. A shock for the former wife of director Marc Simenon who had relapsed last March when she thought she was out of trouble. "I am especially experimenting with a new proto colto treat this damn cancer that has recurred," she said. After once again undergoing many chemotherapy sessions all summer, I was so exhausted that I begged my doctors to stop everything. Of course you are trying to heal me, I told them, but at the same time you are killing me! I couldn't take it anymore."
A great film career
Mylène Demongeot (born Marie-Hélène Demongeot) spent her childhood in Nice, before moving to Paris with her family at the age of 13. A fan of the piano, she finally turned to cinema in 1953. Also a model, she posed for photographer Henry Coste with whom she fell in love. At the age of 21, she was spotted by director Raymond Rouleau for the role of Abigail in the film The Witches of Salem. She married Henry Coste in 1958, before divorcing in 1968. Compared to Brigitte Bardot because of their blondness, Mylène Demongeot decided to turn to foreign cinema. She became particularly famous in Italy in 1959 with The Battle of Marathon, as well as in Bolignini's The Boys.
During her career, Mylène Demongeot has played opposite big names in cinema, such as Jean Marais in Fantomas, Yves Montand, Roger Moore, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Gérard Depardieu and Dirk Bogarde in Le cavalier noir. She was a particularly close friend ofLouis de Funès, Pierre Richardand Henri Salvador. The latter will also be his witness with Marcel Achard during her marriage with Marc Simenon on September 16, 1968. Sadly, he died on October 24, 1999 following an accident. Despite the new headliners, Mylène Demongeot has continued her film career through the decades. She turned in the trilogy "Camping" by Fabien Onteniente, but also in Maman!, the short film by Hélène de Fougerolles.
Beyond cinema, Mylène Demongeot participated in the show Les Grosses têtes on RTL, by Philippe Bouvard, from September 2013 to June 2014. Politically engaged, she registered on Bernard Tapie's list in 1992 for the regional elections of Provence-Alpes-Côtes d'Azur in the Bouches-du-Rhône. That same year, she was scammed by her financial manager. Nearly 2 million euros had been embezzled from him, which served as loans to other film celebrities, such as Isabelle Adjani or Samy Naceri. Committed to various causes, she has worked for the protection of animals, the fight against pollution and anti-personnel mines.
