Ernie Lively, the Hollywood father who helped his five children, most notably his daughter Blake, to acting careers, died Thursday. He was 74.
Lively died from heart complications, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He was surrounded by his family in Los Angeles.
Not to be outdone by his children, Lively had a lengthy acting career of his own, including appearances in both “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” films. In those movies, he played the father of Blake’s character, Bridget Vreeland.
Born in 1947 in Baltimore, Lively earned his first acting credit in 1975 on the TV series “The Waltons” and went on to appear in numerous other shows and movies. He was also a successful acting coach.
In 2013, Lively underwent a brand-new heart procedure, called retrograde gene therapy. He was the first person in the world to get the treatment, which involves injecting stem cells into the heart to repair damaged arteries and muscles.
“I woke up the other morning and told my wife, ‘I haven’t felt this good in years,’” he said at the time. “I moved to Utah because of the snow, but I haven’t been able to ski. I literally didn’t have the heart to do it. Now, I’m excited about living the rest of my life instead of sitting around.”
Ernie and his wife, Elaine Lively, had two children together (Blake and Eric), and he adopted her three children from a previous marriage (Lori, Jason and Robyn).
Lori, 54, appeared in several TV shows, including “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “Two and Half Men.” Jason, 53, starred in “National Lampoon’s European Vacation.” Robyn, 49, played a leading role in “Teen Witch” before popping up in several TV shows. Eric, 39, starred in 2004′s “Speak” and appeared in the original “American Pie.” Blake, 34, rose to fame in the “Sisterhood” movies and on “Gossip Girl” and most recently starred in “The Rhythm Section.”
