Tuesday, March 30. Gérard Filipelli, known as “Phil”, was part of the merry band of Charlots. With Gérard Rinaldi, Jean Sarrus, Jean-Guy Fechner, Luis Rego and Richard Bonnot, he had formed the musical and humorous group, known in particular for several songs as well as films The Bidasses in madness (1971), The madmen of the stadium (1972), The Grand Bazaar (1973) or again The Charlots vs. Dracula (1980).
From Problems to Charlots
Gérard Filippelli was the curtain opener at the REX cinema in Paris, when he met Jean Sarrus and Gérard Rinaldi who offered him to be manager of their group. He was guitarist of the group Les Problèmes, first name of the Charlots, who accompanied the singer Antoine on the album Antoine meets the Problems (1966). The musicians then provided the first parts of François Hardy, Johnny Hallyday or Claude François. A few years later, they renamed themselves Les Charlots, in reference to the character played by Charlie Chaplin, and they then decided to specialize in humorous songs, with hits like Paulette the queen of paupiettes or The Woodwounds (song distortion Les Play-Boys by Jacques Dutronc).
After the dedication to the cinema, the members of the group left the band one after the other. In 1997, when only Richard Bonnot, Gérard Filippelli and Jean Sarrus remained, The Charlots have officially separated. Another iconic member of the troupe, Gérard Rinaldi died in 2012, at the age of 69. Another Charlot has unfortunately just joined him.
