RIP Patrick Poivey

He was a cult voice, that of Patrick Poivey. The French actor, essential voice of the hexagonal dubbing (or post-synchronization as he preferred to name the exercise), left us this Tuesday June 16 at the age of 72 years. Tom Cruise, Kyle MacLachlan, Don Johnson and obviously Bruce Willis are among the actors who were able to rely on the unique stamp of the actor.

Passed by the Cours Simon and the Conservatoire, Patrick Poivey immersed himself in the world of dubbing in the early 70s. Very active in the studio for cinema and television, he illustrated himself on a few films (Massacre with a chainsaw, Apocalypse Now, Tron, The Thing …) and outstanding series (Riptide, Supercopter), before his path crosses that of Bruce Willis.

Since the Claire de Lune series in 1985, his stamp has been inseparable from the career of the American actor, whom he has dubbed on more than 70 films. With the exception of a few feature films (including Le Cinquième Elément), Patrick Poivey and his unique laugh accompanied the star, notably, of course, on the “Yippee Ki Yay” from the Die Hard franchise.

During his vocal career who crossed five decades, Patrick Poivey also dubbed Tom Cruise on ten feature films (including Top Gun and Rain Man), Don Johnson (from Deux cops à Miami à Watchmen), Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks, Desperate Housewives), Michael Biehn (Terminator), Mickey Rourke (9 1/2 weeks), Daniel Day-Lewis (The Last of the Mohicans), Charlie Sheen (Wall Street) or even his brother Emilio Estevez (Young Guns).

Very active in theater, television, radio and advertising, Patrick Poivey had recently participated in the short film We got dubbed alongside other famous dubbing actors. A tasty appearance that you can find in the video below. In the documentary The voices of legendary dubbing accompanying the short film, Patrick Poivey addressed this sympathetic message to the new generation: “If you want to dub, be actors. Go to a drama class near your home, play comedy with your partner and have fun!”
