The director's biggest success was "Joelma 23º andar", a film inspired by a psychographed account by Chico Xavier of a typist killed in the tragic fire in São Paulo

Filmmaker Clery Cunha, 85, died on Thursday (4/7), victim of cancer, in São Paulo. The director was known for works such as "The Disqualified", with Hélio Souto and Joana Fomm in a thriller inspired by a true crime, and "Joelma 23rd Floor", a film with Beth Goulart, which recounts the fire in the Joelma building, in São Paulo, which made him the father of Spiritist cinema.

Born in Leopoldo de Bulhões, Goiás, Cunha began his career in 1956 as a cable operator for TV Tupi. After working in the technical area, he was an actor in programs such as "TV de vanguarda", followed by work in the theater, acting in "Sorocaba senhor" and "O amor venceu", directing "Pluft, o fantasminha" and "Entre quatro paredes", in addition to being a radio producer.
