Munich-based director, producer and writer Rainer Erler has died. He died today at the age of 90 in his adopted home of Perth in Australia, his family announced.
With artistic contributions such as the successful psychological thriller "Meat", he repeatedly provided material for discussion.
His last major film – "The Kaltenbach Papers" from 1990 – had a star-studded cast with Mario Adorf and Ulrich Tukur. "It was hard for me to stop," he said during an interview on his 90th birthday this August.
Erler wanted to point out grievances
Filmmaking was his life, his elixir of life, but also an outlet to point out grievances and unhealthy developments. "I've always been an author, and there were already more than enough topics back then."
Among the best-known works of the Munich-born artist were the socio-critical comedy "Seelenwanderung", the political drama "Plutonium", the science fiction films "The Blue Palace" and "Operation Ganymede" as well as the psychological thriller "Meat", in which Erler addressed the topic of organ trafficking in a gripping way as early as 1979.
The film has been sold to cinema distributors in 127 countries, according to Erler. "Even in the GDR, it was an incredible success. They sold twelve million cinema tickets there."
