Actor Michael Mendl has died. He passed away at the age of 82, his agent told the German Press Agency. He “passed away peacefully.” Several media outlets had previously reported the news.
Mendl has appeared in feature films such as “Downfall” and “Barfuss”; he has also appeared in TV movies on ARD and ZDF and in the Netflix series “Dark”.
He often played historical figures. He won a Golden Camera for his role as former Chancellor Willy Brandt in the film “Im Schatten der Macht”. In the docudrama “Karol Wojtyla”, he played Pope John Paul II, and in the drama “Die Gustloff”, he played a captain.
From the Theater Stage to the Screen
He was born in 1944 in Lünen, Westphalia, as the illegitimate son of a Catholic priest. He initially grew up in the Ruhr region. Later, Mendl studied briefly in Vienna, then attended the Folkwang School in Essen. He performed on theater stages for many years.
He didn’t get into film until later in life. “I was incredibly lucky,” Mendl told the German Press Agency in an interview in 2019. In TV movies, he certainly played the TV heartthrob. But Mendl felt he wasn’t a dashing romantic hero. “Instead, I’m a character actor. I play the difficult roles—even the villainous ones.”
Mendl lived in Munich for a long time before moving to Berlin. In the Netflix series *Dark*, which had a large following, he played the former director of a nuclear power plant. He also made guest appearances in many crime dramas and TV series.
