Renato Scarpa, the actor who has entered the hearts of Italians, has died playing the role of Sergio, Verdone’s friend in “A beautiful lot”, reluctant to leave with the protagonist for the improvised mid-August holidays in Poland. This was announced by the Messenger. According to what the Roman newspaper writes “Renato Scarpa died in his home in Rome, in the Monteverde district “.

Scarpa was a character actor, he had made his debut on the big screen in the late ’70s; with Trooisi he had played the role of Robertino in the film “Ricomincio da tre”.

From what was reconstructed Scarpa felt ill in the early afternoon; the family members immediately called a 118 ambulance. The carabinieri also arrived on the spot. Death is attributed to natural causes.

Scarpa’s career, however, cannot be reduced to two – albeit important – films. In his career he has worked in many highly regarded films and with many important directors.

He is the severe Father Corazza in the grotesque “Nel nome del padre” (1972) by Marco Bellocchio, the inflexible Dominican father Alberto Tragagliolo in “Giordano Bruno” by Giuliano Montaldo (1973), the mysterious professor Verdegast in the disturbing Suspiria (1977) by Dario Argento, the director of the upper post office and friend of the protagonist there “Il Postino” (Troisi’s latest film) by Michael Radford; the priest grappling with everyday life in the bittersweet “West of Donald Duck” (1982) by Alessandro Benvenuti, Dr. Cazzaniga in “So Spoke Bellavista” (1984) and in “The Mystery of Bellavista” (1985), both by Luciano De Crescenzo.

He also plays the protagonist’s apprehensive father in the entertaining “Stefano Quantestorie” (1993) by Maurizio Nichetti, the task principal in the drama “The Son’s Room” (2001) by Nanni Moretti, the banker with gastroenterological problems in the Neapolitan culinary comedy “Ribelli per chance” (2001) by Vincenzo Terracciano, and the Cardinal Dean Gregori in the film “Habemus Papam” by Nanni Moretti (2011).

Alfonso Mejía, a golden film figure and “Pedro” in Luis Buñuel's Los Olivos, has died.

He was 15 years old when he was chosen to give life to the protagonist of the emblematic film by the Spanish director, a film awarded by UNESCO

The death of Alfonso Mejía Silvia , one of the actors who stood out in Mexican gold films and who was part of the cast of the emblematic Mexican film Los Olivos , released in 1950, has been announced. This was announced by the account of Televisa Espectáculos Twitter:

“Alfonso Mejía Silva died of natural causes, remembered for his role as Pedro in Luis Buñuel's The Forgotten, considered Memory of the World by UNESCO. He was 87 years old. "

The film that caused a stir in its time and conflicting opinions by showing the harshness of precariousness in Mexico City, was starred by the now deceased artist, who would later become the heartthrob of the so-called golden age.

Alfonso Mejía was born in the capital city on December 16, 1934. It was at 15 when by a group of friends who encouraged him, he auditioned for the Ultramar Films production house to choose the main character of the film from the creative period of “Mexican Buñuel ”.

Finally, thanks to his histrionic gifts and his expressive face, Alfonso was chosen for the film that painted a "very degrading portrait of social classes", according to the opinion of some characters of those years. Such is the case of Jorge Negrete, who at that time presided over the National Association of ANDA Actors and tried to persuade Buñuel to film the story, by giving an image that, he claimed, "did not correspond to Mexico."

After his success in the film, which managed to appear at the Cannes festival and won 11 Ariel awards from the Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Sciences and Arts, including the one for Best Child Actor for Mejía, the actor developed a prolific career in the cinema.

He also received two nominations: one for the film Our Father, from 1954, and another for The Tunnel, from 1956. He also stood out in other films such as La bienamada (1951), directed by Emilio Fernández. In Unbridled Youth he alternated with Columba Domínguez in 1956, to later appear in The Age of Temptation, in 1959.

In 1952 he participated with Arturo de Córdova, Ramón Gay and Marga López in My wife and the other; With Maricruz Olivier and Tere Velázquez he stood out in Quinceañera, 1960, followed by Tomorrow will be men, Youth without God and For my pistols, where he appeared alongside Mario Moreno Cantinflas, in 1968.

The last film appearance of the deceased actor was in the year of 1970, in Rubí, starring the also disappeared Iran Eory.

It is known that after that filming he decided to retire from artistic life to dedicate his time to his family, made up of his wife Carmelita -who was his admirer for years and with whom hefew years resting in Chihuahua.

After his retirement, he dedicated himself to working in that town, on Channel 28 television, performing work as a producer and advisor. He also served as a teacher at the Television Training Center.

In 2011 he was contacted by Vanguardia magazine, where he commented on his approach to Luis Buñuel's production: “The first contact I had with Buñuel was at the Tepeyac Studios, I went to Bar Loth, the back, and I he started making a find and finished the film, he participated in the Cannes festival. Later with the Academy of Cinematographic Arts he won eleven Arieles. I started working in the cinema because they called me, I worked with Indio Fernández, with Chano Urueta, in El tunnel six, a very good movie. Then I did the one in Tarahumara in Chihuahua with Luis Arcoriza”, he recalled then.

"I feel that people come to live in oblivion, nobody remembers you, only the people who are close to the film industry, or who are going to be film sociologists ... come to the cinema because you have to see what great geniuses like Luis Buñuel filmed with a natural way”, said the late actor today.

RIP Jean-Marc Vallée

Jean-Marc Vallée Has Died; Director Of ‘Dallas Buyers Club,’ ‘Big Little Lies’ & ‘Sharp Objects’ Was 58

DEADLINE

By Mike Fleming Jr.

December 26, 2021

Jean-Marc Vallée has died suddenly at age 58. The Canadian writer, director, editor and producer won Emmy Awards and a DGA Award for Big Little Lies, and was Oscar nominated for Dallas Buyers Club, the film that won Oscars for both Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto. I am still gathering details but can divulge that he passed away at his cabin outside Quebec City, and that his family and close advisors are in shock.

Hailing from Montreal, Quebec, Vallée began making short films and soon moved into features with his 1995 debut Black List, and his breakthrough came with C.R.A.Z.Y., which won four Genie Awards in Canada, including Best Picture, Best Screenplay and Best Director for Vallée. After directing The Young Victoria and Cafe de Flore, Vallée really hit his stride with Dallas Buyers Club. Based on the true life tale of Ron Woodroof, a Texas electrician who was diagnosed with AIDS and given a month to live. The scrappy Woodroof smuggled alternative medicine and drugs that were not approved in the U.S., to help himself and others suffering from AIDS a chance to prolong their lives. This was a worthy project that stalled before Vallée committed. Released in 2013 with McConaughey, Leto and Jennifer Garner starring, the film became a critical darling. Both McConaughey and Leto won Golden Globe Awards, and they repeated those wins at the Oscars, where the film was nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay, with Vallée also receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Film Editing under his alias, John Mac McMurphy.

He followed with an adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s memoir Wild, which starred Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern. The film was nominated for three Oscars.

Then, Vallée turned his attention to longform television series, and the results were seminal.

In 2017 Vallée received the DGA Award and the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for the HBO Limited Series Big Little Lies, which he also executive produced. In total the series won eight Emmys and four Golden Globes. He also directed and executive produced the HBO limited series Sharp Objects, which was nominated for eight Emmys.

Said producing partner Nathan Ross, “Jean-Marc stood for creativity, authenticity and trying things differently. He was a true artist and a generous, loving guy. Everyone who worked with him couldn’t help but see the talent and vision he possessed. He was a friend, creative partner and an older brother to me. The maestro will sorely be missed but it comforts knowing his beautiful style and impactful work he shared with the world will live on.”

Vallée is survived by his sons, Alex and Émile, and siblings Marie-Josée Vallée, Stéphane Tousignant and Gérald Vallée.

“Jean-Marc Vallée was a brilliant, fiercely dedicated filmmaker, a truly phenomenal talent who infused every scene with a deeply visceral, emotional truth,” HBO said in a statement. “He was also a hugely caring man who invested his whole self-alongside every actor he directed. We are shocked at the news of his sudden death, and we extend our heartfelt sympathies to his sons, Alex and Émile, his extended family, and his longtime producing partner, Nathan Ross.”
