Blackie Dammett — an
actor, reported drug dealer to the stars, and the father of Red Hot Chili Peppers
singer Anthony Kiedis — has died. He reportedly passed away yesterday (May 12)
at the age of 81.
This news comes via the Facebook group We Support Blackie Dammett — a group
that began as a way to promote Dammett's 2013 autobiography Lords of the
Sunset Strip, but later evolved into a way to support Dammett following his
dementia diagnosis. Back in 2017, Anthony
Kiedis revealed during a RHCP show that Dammett was sick and
"going to be sailing on" soon.
Dammett's real name was John Kiedis, and he was an actor who had roles in Lethal
Weapon, Starsky and Hutch, Night Court and Magnum, P.I. ,
among others.
In recent decades, he has perhaps become even better known for being Anthony
Kiedis' father; the singer spent much of his childhood living with Dammett in
Los Angeles, and Dammett's drug dealing and celebrity friends played a major
part of Kiedis' 2004 memoir Scar Tissue.
Back in 2011, there were reports that Kiedis' upbringing with Dammett was being
turned into an HBO show called Spider & Son.
Dammett also ran the RHCP fan club for many years, and personally mailed
correspondence to each member. He is the subject of RHCP songs including
"Savior" and "The Hunter."
