RIP David Warner

Veteran British actor David Warner, star of The Omen and Tron, dies aged 80

The stage and screen veteran’s multifaceted career included roles in Titanic, Time Bandits and Straw Dogs, as well as a renowned Hamlet for the RSC

The veteran British actor David Warner has died aged 80. The BBC reported that Warner died from “a cancer-related illness” and that his family confirmed the news “with an overwhelmingly heavy heart”.

Warner’s varied career spanned cinema, stage, television and radio. He was regarded as the finest Hamlet of his generation on stage, then gravitated into cinema as a character actor, travelling from British 1960s cinema to the sci-fi universes of Tron, Doctor Who and Star Trek to James Cameron’s Titanic, in which he played the malicious enforcer Spicer Lovejoy.

In a statement to the BBC, Warner’s family said: “Over the past 18 months he approached his diagnosis with a characteristic grace and dignity … He will be missed hugely by us, his family and friends, and remembered as a kind-hearted, generous and compassionate man, partner and father, whose legacy of extraordinary work has touched the lives of so many over the years. We are heartbroken.”

Warner was born in Manchester, in 1941. His parents were unmarried and he spent time in the care of both, describing his childhood as “troubled” and “messy”. His Russian-Jewish father sent him to a succession of boarding schools. His mother disappeared from his life when he was a teenager, he revealed.

After school he studied at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. From the outset, Warner was insecure about his acting ability and his looks. Tall (6 foot 2) and rangy, he never imagined himself as a leading man. But after joining the Royal Shakespeare Company, aged 21, he was cast as the lead in Karel Reisz’s critically acclaimed film Morgan, A Suitable Case For Treatment, and the RSC cast him as Hamlet in 1965.

Warner’s portrayal of Shakespeare’s prince as a proto-student radical horrified traditional critics but chimed with the younger audiences. “When I was a kid and saw Shakespeare, I never heard the actors for all the posturing and declaiming,” he later said. “I thought surely kids today were the same as I was, not wanting Shakespeare shoved down their throats. I wanted to make them come back again, of their own free will.”

MANILA—Former Sampaguita Pictures star and veteran actor Boy Alano has passed away on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at 11 a.m., in a rented house in Sampaloc, Manila.

He was 81.

Condolences poured in from people who remember and knew the actor.

Even fans of his previous co-star in the box-office hit Roberta, Tessie Agana, were saddened by the passing of the actor as they were supposedly expecting a reunion of the two, after receiving news about the actress’s scheduled return to the Philippines.

Born Herminio Alano on March 20, 1941 and millennials may not know him but Boy was one of the biggest stars of his time. He started his acting career at an early age and he was able to land roles in more than 200 films and television shows by the year 1950.

He won the award for Best Child Actor at the 5th Asian Film Fest, experienced becoming an assistant director for the film Cheeta-eh: Ganda Lalake? which featured comedian Rene Requiestas (died in 1993), and starred alongside the “King of Philippine Comedy” Dolphy (died in 2012) and the “King of Philippine Movies” Fernando Poe Jr. (died in 2004) in several projects.

At the height of the pandemic in August 2020, previous Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) chairperson Liza Diño, revealed that multi-awarded veteran actress Nora Aunor sent in a request to help her former co-star.

Boy and the Superstar had become relatively close after being cast together in multiple films like Tomboy Nora, Tell Nora I Love Her, Munting Santa, Ang Pangarap Ko’y Ikaw, Three For The Road, Orang, and more.

“Kailangan niya talagang madalaw, ma-checkup, ‘tapos yung mga pangangailangan niya,” Liza said.

This wasn’t the first time that Boy became the subject of a social welfare operation. In a 2018 episode of ABS-CBN’s public service program Mission Possible, it was revealed that the former star was living in a garage.

Trieste bids farewell to Franco Zucca: his is the voice of Ben Kingsley in "Schindler's List"

Il Piccolo

July 24, 2022

TRIESTE  Franco Zucca, actor from Trieste but above all a great voice actor, the voice of actors such as Alain Delon, Rod Steiger, Max von Sidow, Oliver Reed, Michael Caine and Omar Sharif, died on the eve of his 70th birthday (he would have turned them on August 26th). Among his most successful and well-known characterizations, the amazing Ben Kingsley of "Schindler's List" ("Whoever saves a life, saves the whole world"), the refined Raúl Juliá of "The Addams Family" and Robert Picardo, the hologram doctor of "Star Trek".

Franco Zucca, born in Trieste on August 26, 1952, had started at the Contrada, and then joined the ranks of the Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia, then in the companies of Catania and Rome. His career as a voice actor was exhausted, embracing films, animated films, television series, video games, cartoons. His was a warm and intense voice, never academic, the expression of an actor's apprenticeship: "The important training ground was the radio, I really did a lot of it and I owe my acting approach to Ugo Amodeo", he said in an interview with Small from a few years ago. «I entered the building under Bolchi making my debut in '71 in" Crime and punishment ". Then I tried the way of dubbing and it went well for me, between luck and merit. But I have to tell young people to stay away from the crumbling Roman dubbing schools. They are a scam and are only used to extract money. The only way must be that of the actor. Without being actors, dubbing is not done. Then you have to arm yourself with courage and patience and start the various auditions. It is a very difficult but fascinating path: dubbing is sacrosanct, it combines technique and artistry, but at the base there is only one role: that of the actor ».

He was very fond of the American series "Law and Order", where he began by voicing cop-actors George Dzundza and Jerry Orbach, and then took over the dub, but he also liked to remember his participation in "Happy Days", and then to Star Trek: Voyager, The Medici, The Lady in Yellow, up to Game of Thrones. The actors he loved most were those from the world of theater: Tom Wilkinson, whom he voiced in "Michael Clayton", and Pete Postlethwaite, who voiced in "In the Name of the Father" and "Thank You, Mrs. Thatcher." In "The shape of water" by Guillermo del Toro, winner of four Oscars and Golden Lion, Franco Zucca is the voice of Richard Jenkins.

RIP Kathy Marlowe

Los Angeles Times

July 17, 2022

December 31, 1934 - July 2, 2022 1950s era blonde film "Goddess" Kathy Marlowe, once labeled the "It Girl" as the most recognized and photographed advertising model of the time, passed away July 2nd. She was 87. Breaking into acting with a role in 1958 cast in an "adults only" low-budget, now classic-cult film titled Girl With An Itch, Marlowe went on to roles in Bombers B-52 for Warner Brothers, The Helen Morgan Story, Death In Small Doses, The Phoenix City Story, and Queen of Outer Space, among others. On the small screen, the 5'6" actress with the classic 37-24-36 figure, Marlowe was a regular foil with George Burns on The Burns and Allen Show, playing the sexy fiancee of Burn's son Ronnie on the program, one of television's most popular episodic shows of TV's early decade. Also appearing with Dean Martin and many other stars on television, Marlowe took her place in the line up of "50's blondes" including Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield, Mamie Van Doren and others in the Hollywood history books.

Marlow was born Kathleen Maslowski to parents Thomas & Julia Maslowski on December 31, 1934, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was stunning at a young age, and the allure of Hollywood in the late 1940s post WWII drew her to California at age 15 since she was able to live with an older sister with a residence in Van Nuys. The high school kid with big dreams had a very practical side. The child of Polish immigrants, Maslowski knew the value of a buck. She enrolled in high school and also went to work as a bookkeeper while taking modeling courses. She also found her way into the big studios in the San Fernando Valley getting work as an extra on movie lots.

Graduating high school in Van Nuys, Maslowski became Marlowe. By this time, she was also teaching modeling and getting noticed as an ideal figure model perfectly representing the 1950's style of the sexy young American blonde girl next door. Over the next five years, Marlowe would be featured in thousands of ad layouts and would be named countless times as "Miss" this and that. It was serious public relations business of the day. Among her credits, far too many to mention all, are "Miss Long White Potato", "Miss Traveling Saleslady", "Miss Chinchilla", "Miss Green Stamps", and "Miss Lawn Seed".

She also appeared at any and every opening ceremony from department stores to highways to ship launchings. Marlowe was a worker. She was a practical mid-western Polish girl who took nothing for granted and accepted every job she could handle.

With the dawning of the early 1960s, the era of the blonde was fading. Acting roles and modeling roles diminished. In 1962 at a chance meeting in a Burbank bar, Marlowe met a former Navy sailor Jerry Thompson who operated fishing boats in Newport Beach. The actress and the fishing boat captain married and lived an idyllic life on the Newport bayfront for the next sixty years, and would have been celebrating the occasion of their 60th anniversary on April 6, 2022.

Predeceased by husband Gerald (Jerry) Thompson in 2018, Kathy Marlowe Thompson is survived by three children: son Gerald Livingston Thompson, Jr. (Betty); daughter April Ann Thompson-Egbert, grandsons, Spencer Gerald Egbert and Pierce Steven Egbert; and son Todd William Thompson (April Jennifer Grice-Thompson), and grandchildren. Ava Lee Grace Thompson, Tayden Courage Thompson and Josiah Endure Thompson.

A black-tie Hollywood themed celebration of life will be held in Newport Beach at the Balboa Bay Resort, Newport Beach. Please contact April Egbert at aegbert@firstam.com.In lieu of flowers, donations in Kathy Marlowe Thompson's name may be made to Share Our Selves, Costa Mesa an Orange County based non-profit serving the working poor families in the community (
